Meeting in the Village Hall 12th Oct 10:00 am
There will be a meeting in the Village Hall on Saturday 12th October from 10:00 am to discuss all aspects of the Xmas lights Switch-On on the 6th December.
Everybody is welcome , young and old, we need lots of ideas. The Event will start at 2;00 pm with the Switch On at 4:00 and then we can have another hour to wrap things up.
The main thing is this is purely a Village event and will be whatever we make of it, so please come along and put your thoughts forward. Then we can get on with making all the plans to make sure what we want to happen, does.
You may have noticed that all the lights on the Greens are down, this is so they can be assessed and refurbished if necessary.
In order to do this the Village Hall has been book for the morning of 13th July, so they can be laid out and looked over, and assessments of what new lights are needed made.
If anybody wants to help, (in screwing a plug on etc) they are most welcome, also any ideas on where, what, how will be gratefully received, and listened to!
We also need to begin to sort out a Lighting Up Party, the Village Hall is booked but we need ideas as to what we can do to make it an enjoyable afternoon. Again any ideas from groups or individuals will be more than helpful.
This is not a “Xmas Lights Committee meeting” as there isnt one, its just , hopefully, the village getting together and making our display this year fun and festive.
THE CRAVEN HERALD
It seems our Phone Box has come to the attention of the writers of the Craven Diary. I have to say it does not LOOK very good at the moment, but contrary to the piece it is not rotting and rusting away. The structure of the box is safeguarded with primer paint, while the Parish Councils application for a Big Lottery Grant is proceeding. It is a provision of such a grant that monies are only paid out for future work , so we can not finish the refurbishment and then claim the money back!
The plans were outlined in the magazine a few months back and are still on going as with all these things its time and money. The Council has already spent a good deal on the box, all the items to bring it back to looking pristine have to be from specialist suppliers so if anybody has a couple of thousand pounds to spare? Then of course that would just leave an empty box, which is were the full Grant application comes in. I really hope that by this time next year, and hopefully by Mayday, the whole area will be looking spic and span.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS 2019
Last years’ lights were a hurried affair and I hope we can do better this year.
The Parish Council has agreed to put £1000 in towards renewals and repairs, so that’s a start.
However there is a lot to do, a new electric supply is needed to replace the one on the Rohan shop, and it has been suggested this is moved to the Village Hall, which would give us a more manageable supply. The electrical box which powers the lights around Maypole Green is also in need of replacement.
It is impractical to light the Christmas Tree with mains power , every year its an issue, so this year we will go to battery lights and have many more! Also there is a suggestion to move the tree to the small Green in front of the Village Hall, it can be seen from the road there and if we also have lights on the Hall , this can be the focal point of the display.
The Main Green needs new lights and the lanterns need rewiring and reattaching to the trees. We could also put a tree in the old spot, or something else?
The Maypole illumination has once again shown how hard it is to erect and get down, perhaps a new idea , involving less damn hard work is needed. A suggestion has been made to just run lights down from the “scrolls” to poles on the ground, if we use low voltage lights there would be no hazard.
We need a switching on ceremony , I was so sorry that last year we had no time to get this organised. We need to make the Village Hall the centre and if we can organise this to coincide with the Xmas Fayre so much the better.
If anybody has any thoughts, good , bad or why are we bothering, then please let us know, its a lot of effort to get it right and we need to know how the village thinks.
Hope this keeps people up to date as to what we have in mind.
Development at Green Gate Lane
The Council discussed this matter at the meeting on 5th Sept. Here are some of the thoughts which we think are relevant.
- The site is designated by North Yorkshire Dales as building land, that will not change, so development is going on there at some point
- There is already outline planning permission, again granted by the Dales Authority, for a development of housing on the site. That permission had attached to it a large number of conditions.
- The Highways Dept. of North Yorkshire CC, raised no issues as to the roadway use or vehicular access to the site at the outline planning stage.
- The properties are for a mix of shared ownership and renting , this is a major consideration in the Dales Authority thinking , as they are legally bound to bring forward plans for such schemes
The Parish Council has never thought this is a good location to develop as housing, but that argument has long since been lost.
The size of the development ,in the Councils opinion, will overstretch the road as far as traffic is concerned, both during construction and after, but we have a highways department that seems to think otherwise.
The Council is deeply concerned with the construction process, as to its impact on usage of School Lane. There are conditions already in place as to what, where and when should be moved along School Lane and the Maypole Green area. The Council can only try to see that these conditions are met, it can not say, for instance, “well they wont do it will they”, this is not a valid objection in the rules of planning applications.
The Council will be raising these issues and putting in some objections to the plans, but it must be remembered these have to be on material grounds, not what might happen to the development or its houses in the future. Any member of the public can send an objection in as well(that cut off date will have passed if you are reading this in the Parish Mag) , and the more that do, the greater the weight they have.
Nobody thinks the development is , in itself, a bad thing, affordable housing in the Dales is badly needed. Whether this development delivers that in the long term , well only time will tell.
Development,of any sort is seen by Governments as a good thing, this is enshrined in the planning procedures and will happen. The final decision will be made by the Dales Authority Planning people, if it gets the go ahead the village can be sure the Parish Council will do its best to make sure all conditions laid on the developers are carried through, especially when it comes to the safety of the children.
The above is from the personal recollections of issues raised at the Council meeting, and is not the official minutes of the Council Meeting.
